94 Mercury 115 Motor Question

Bought a boat that has been sitting for a few years. It came with a 94 Mercury 115 Outboard. I know it's a 2 stroke with 4 carbs. I can smell the fuel being old. Is this one of the engine which runs the top 2 carbs for idle and at WOT uses all 4? Besides removing the carburators and cleaning them out. Is there any easy method to get them cleaned. I have some carburator experience. But not so good at synchronizing. So will probably have them synchronized at a boat shop. Any help will be great. Thanks Mike

I think Steve can attest that even if these are perfectly "synch'd" when the second two cylinders kick in or out (somewhere in the 1800-2200 rpm range) it can seem kinda "violent" to those not used to these motors. You could spend alot of time fiddling trying to "tune" an apparent problem that is really normal.

Thank you both for you help. The kicking in of the 2 cylinders I read about that's how I found out it's not like a regular motor. But makes more sence now when you say it feels pretty violant but it's normal. I can't wait to get this thing water worthy again.

The product Sea Foam sounds like the easy way to go without pulling the carbs. Does that stuff actually work? I know the best fix for the problem is to remove the carbs and go through them. Just curious about this Sea Foam stuff.

Does that stuff actually work?

One of the best products around. It will keep the fuel stabilized, clean out "minor" fuel gum from the fuel system and carbon buildup in the combustion chambers.

In a 2 stroke caburetors MUST BE VERIFIED CLEAN------------If there is a plugged carburetor then no fuel will be going into one cylinder and NO OIL.------Take them apart and inspect / clean them.

Thanks for all the feedback. Yeah over the years I learned there are 2 ways to do things. Half assed and the right way. So when it comes to boating I'm gonna tear the carbs off and go through them. Don't need to get stranded in the middle of water. Thank you everyone for your help.
