94 Johnson out board shifting in reverse

I had my boat out the other day first time in about 4-5 years.anyway boat ran great but I do have two questions, first the engine would start easy if I push the button in on the throttle and give it some gas,I have a new battery in it the 2nd thing when I would put throttle in reverse the shifting seemed hard,while had to push down on the throttle while giving it gas. All the cables don't have kinks in them but I will check again.thank you so very much for everybody's help in the past.

In the 4+ years you didn't use it, how and where was it stored?

It's been on driveway I had it out in the water but it seemed to me it was a little stiff pulling it into reverse

rusted shift cables.

Can that be fixed and is that rust at the shift cables
