Hello and hope all is well! Wondering if anyone has come across this issue and knows how to solve it.. Last season my 94 Johnson 60hp outboard starting running funky.. was starting to get tricky to cold start, and often wouldn't run at full throttle. Checked the cables and nothing was wrong with the throttle as the butterfly valves would fully open. It just wouldnt run at full power but often after some time it would open up and run properly.. figured that it was only running on two of three cylinders when this was happening and assumed that one of the carbs was just gummed up and needed cleaning.. Took it to the local small-town boat mechanic a few weeks back because we figured it was time for a once-over anyhow (owned the used boat for about five years now).. When he got to looking at it he said he couldnt get it to start at all and needed to change the control box to get spark and then figure out from there what the issue is.. Changed that part and says he still cant get it firing and that its probably an electrical issue, and he'll prob go down a rabbit hole of changing parts before he figures out what the issue is.. All three cylinders do have compression. Important to note that i havent talked to the mechanic directly, i share the boat with my friend who lives close to the shop and he is relaying information.. not even sure what the control box is, since he wasnt getting it to fire i assumed he was changing the ignition coil.
He mentioned that the next thing to change would be the stator.. Since the boat is old and we dont want to sink a lot of money into repairs we are going to take it back and start dissecting on our own.. Mechanic said he would rather we take it back anyways since he doesnt know how much it will end up costing us..
Has anyone come across this and can give me an idea of what the issue might be? a new stator will cost about $300 and i dont mind buying and installing, but am worried that it wont solve the issue and maybe the stator isn't what i need to be looking at.. any advice would be helpful.
Only thing i have done to it so far is change the primer solenoid cap and fuel lines.. started easy and ran great for a season and a half after that, and then i ran into the issue of only two cylinders firing.
