94 Cobra 50 dies when put into gear

"My 94 Chris Craft has an OMC

"My 94 Chris Craft has an OMC Cobra w/ a 5.0. When I get it started it dies everytime I put it in gear, forward or reverse. Eventually i can get it going and she runs like a bat out of hades. After the engine warms up it has difficulty starting and idling and it almost impossible to get it into gear without dieing. Very embarrassing at the ramp, had to swim it in last week."

Sounds to me that idle may be to low. I had same problem when my idle in nuetral was about 650rpm and that's what it was supposed to be in gear. I set it right and it fixed those same problems.

Thanks for the response. I had to tune up my Holley 2300 350cfm carb. It actually has 2 ports to tune. I found the tuning procedure on Holley.com and an exploded diagram of the carb. The tech from Holley also said it might be the accelerator pump. I found out I have the shifter cable problem so I am working on that now.
