94 200 magnet question

Had to have the stator replaced on the above... and they say my magnets (used motor) had been epoxied back in not spaced correctly. Claim they can redo them, but then that they don't think its a big deal.

Sounds like just making extra cash on the job possibly?

Also the dealer says a rattle of some kind in #6... loose wrist pin, but run it as is for a while and see if it gets worse. My plans are not going very far with it, no more than 10 to 20 miles out at a time, and then in 2 years (we probably don't use it more than 2-3 times a year and most times dont' go near that far) pull it down and do a rebuild ourselves and then good to go. Any comments on the rattle, also #6 has slightly lower compression.

I'd rebuild this fall or next but have to rework the airboat first as I use that airboat more than the 21 hydrasport....

THanks, Jeff

It sounds like the shop is pointing out what they see - if the magnets on the outer ring of the flywheel are a tiny bit out of whack they will have much less affect on things than a magnet on the inner ring which powers the sensor - so depends exactly what they are talking about.

It's your call/gamble on the number 6 "noise" - there is an identified issue that regardless of whether it lasts for a while is not going to get better.

At this point it can probably be reparied - if you leave it and the rod comes through the side of the block then you are looking at a new powerhead (and a 10 mile tow back to the dock) instead of just a rebuild/partial rebuild.

So, how lucky do you feel?

Thanks. Well aware of the powerhead issue. In reality we may not use the motor at all before we take it all apart, OTOH it might get used once this summer and back to the airboat..

But you have my attention, thats what ruined the block before it... hole through the side was how it was when we bought it, but we knew that. 1000 bucks for a boat didnt' expect the motor to be good.

Magnets are on top.. not the machined in ones ... I have one of those from the 89 200... but it doesn't work on this one....

At least we have sea tow.... The repair folks felt that the noise would be just fine for at least 100 hours.... next time you start it bang... you never know.

I always take a more pessimistic approach because I know the very first time I say to someone who has a motor in my garage "it should be ok for ....." it's going to blow up the very next day.

So to prevent hard feelings I always say fix the problem or roll the dice - maybe it would be fine for 100 hours or maybe their estimate was 100 times too optimistic...
