Hey all, longtime lurker here...A buddy asked me to look at his boat and I cant figure this thing out. Its a J140TXARC. Wouldnt start so first thing I did was hook up charger and unplug kill circuit from powerpak. Started up and ran fine. Moved the boat around back to do some other maintenance. It was starting but no more. I have been diagnosing the motor with the main harness unplugged until I can find the fault in the kill circuit, a new switch didnt fix it. What it was doing was firing once giving me a puff of smoke and then nothing. Now I cant even get it to do that. I have been following the CDI troublshooting for this motor as well as a couple other sites. All the resistances I have tested have checked out. I have no way to test DVA currently. The plugs have good hot spark when I test them against block but seem to not spark when I put them back in. Fuel supply seems fine and I even have fuel coming out plug hole from flooding engine. I saw a note on CDI site that says "When all cylinders spark with the spark plugs out, but will not with them installed, try regapping the sensors using 553-9702 gap gauge. (see OMC ADI section)." I have read through the section for ADI and there is no mention of regapping the timer base sensors. Thanks for reading this and thanks for any help you may have to offer me before I start cursing at everything around me.

Ckeck the battery / wires and the starter.-------------A slow cranking motor will not have spark !!--------Check the flywheel key as it controls timing.---------With plugs installed is there spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" on all 4 leads ?

Thanks for the quick reply racerone...I have been using the charger so I can keep cranking RPMs up...around 200-250 I would say, too fast to count. Tomorrow I am going to attempt to take the flywheel off and inspect everything there. I did notice he has L78CY plugs versus the recommended QL77JC4...having the non resistor type plug shouldnt make that big a deal should it? I will try to make spark tester in morning I saw on here and try that test. Thanks again!

I'm having the same problem, with the exception that mine is effected at idle and up to a quarter throttle. Then it runs for about 20 seconds between puffs of smoke until it eventually dies.

I did notice by your remarks tht we do have one item in common the battery. I have to jump this battery to get it going. I'm going to try another batt. It seems that I heard about some motors running throughh the battery and a weak batt. with cause problems.
