Over summer had noticed some random high voltage events displayed on the digital depth finder volt meter that inconsistently came and went. Readings would be in the 15.5 - 16.5 but as I mentioned this was not a consistent thing. Other days it would seemingly be charging fine. Two weeks ago I was out running around and had done a long WOT run across the lake idled in a cove for a bit and the on the trip back still at WOT engine started cutting out. I could back off on throttle and the miss would disappear but if I tried to go back to WOT it would happen again. This miss was also coupled with a tachometer that was going crazy. Bouncing all over the place sometimes reading zero. When the engine would go back to smooth running the tach would also fall in line and read normal. Boat got us home that day and then I started researching. All mechanics are backed up and I don't have every piece of diagnostic equipment on hand to properly check the electronics but it seemed like the regulator/rectifier was likely the culprit. At the same time since I had to pull the flywheel to access I figured I would also throw a new stator at it. Old stator had some spots that looked like heat damage so I believe it was the correct call. Also old stator is not showing correct ohms between the yellow wires. Took it out for a lake test and it ran like a top for that whole evening. Take boat out on Saturday and at first its running just fine but after engine heats up I am once again having an inconsistent power drop at WOT. The current power drop does not affect the tach. It is reading as it should. Yesterday checked coils and they showed the correct ohms. Currently thinking I may have a power pack issue that was caused by the failing stator. Will a failing power pack start acting up once its warmed up? Can a stator or failing regulator/rectifier kill a power pack? Hate to throw more parts at it and be wrong but at same time proper mechanics are backed up and I don't have time for a broken boat at end of season! Plan to put new plug wires on it this eve and do a water test just to rule that out. I doubt its the issue but its cheap and guessing the existing plug wires are likely original.
