93 Johnson 9.9 Questions........

Just picked up this motor and have a few questions. Didn't get a manual, or book with it. Put it in a trash can and the first pull it started after sitting all winter.

I noticed a small amount of oil had leaked out over the winter from the prop exaust, but had read it is normal. But in the pics you will see oil blew out of the hole behind the motor. I wiped this off and when I started it the second time there was little if any oil.

Motor started easy and ran smooth but I noticed that no water was coming out of the black rubber hose, (I'm assuming this is the pee hose ) so I shut it down. Any suggestions? I just ordered a repair manual for it.

The model number is J10RETM if this is some help.

Any time someone buys a used motor my adice is --------" You must look at the water pump and replace the impeller ".--------The oil coming out the exhaust relief may be from the previous owners effort at winterizing it.

The black hose could be plugged. Try removing it at the block and blow it out.--------When you run it the motor may be cooling just fine with that hose indicator plugged.-------------Great motors and too bad they do not build them anymore.-----------Careful how you handle / store the motor, as those plastic cowlings are very expensive.

Great thanks again. Also should have asked this before, I have a question about the controls.........

There is the regular throttle, but on the end there is a cap that turns. What does this adjust?

Also on the stop button, it has the C with safety cable that holds it out. Do you remove this every time to kill the motor or is there another way?

Thanks in advance.............

You can leave that clip on I think, and just push the red button on the end to stop it.-----You can set your slow idle speed with the knob on the end of the handle.

A common mistake is to run a motor with just the water intake screen submerged.------This is not enuff water.-----------It must be submerged with water about 4"/ 6" above the lower unit joint.-----The pump is not self priming if it has been in use for a long time.
