After resealing the lower unit and replacing water impeller I did not have reverse. Took it apart and checked the shaft to see if it turned on me and reinstalled and now do not have forward
 
That is the measurement I've been using.
The shift lever never seems to line up with the shaft when in the same gear selection. It's always about half the diameter of the screw hole off.
Is there a adjustment needed on the controls
 
No adjustment at the control box.----Adjust cable trunnion as needed to fit the pin.-------Lever at the motor ( under the carburetors ) is usually vertical for neutral.
 
I adjusted it to the hole depth on the shaft.
Adjusted the cable to fit
Went to the boat ramp and tested it forward worked ok, when in reverse it was clicking and jumping in and out of gear.
Tried adjusting the cable & no matter which direction it would not ever work in both gears properly. Or consistently.
Only time it worked properly was when I disconnected the cable and manually put in gear. Would stay in gear in both directions. Could the cable be bad?
 
Shift rod height must be set.-----Then it is not adjusted for any reason !----Adjust lever to fit the pin in.----Then adjust trunnion to suit.-----Mistakes can be expensive.
