Hey guys i have a 92 johnson 60hp with oil injection. I recently had to change the waterpump in my boat. the motor ran great prior to changing it. But after i changed the waterpump wenever i rev the motor to 2500-2800 rpms the motor acts like its hitting a rev limiter whether its in gear or if i just rev the motor wen its in neutral. It starts fine and idles and runs great up to wen it starts to act like its hitting a rev limiter. im assuming i might have done something wrong but i dont know what. Everything looks like its in place. Anyone ever run into this or might know whats causing this??? any help is greatly appriciated!! Thanks

It sounds like the motor is going into the SLOW mode, the engine is overheating or thinks it is overheating. is the warning horn going off?
you need to check the warning horn and make sure it is working,

"How to check your warning horn.
1. Disconnect bullet connector at temperature switch.
2. connect engine harness half of bullet connector to a clean engine ground.
3. With the key switch in the on position, the horn should sound. if the horn does not sound, the horn or wiring is
damaged."

if the horn is not working you need to trouble shoot the horn or wirning harness to fix.
next we need to check and see if the motor is overheating, when the motor acts up, place your hand on the head and see if you can keep you hand on it...
or take a temp reading and see what the temp is.
you might want to go ahead and check the waterpump you installed on the motor, and make sure it is working right.
let us know what you find and we can go from there.

It was running okay, then you fixed it. And if married, your wife looks down and states, Oh God, what have you done now? :) (Couldn't resist).

Seriously, as "coueytwo" states, check the operation of that warning horn first.

Then double check your work..... impeller key in place, water pump seated and sealed properly, water tube entering grommet properly? Note that it is extremely easy to overlook having the water tuube hitting the upper edge of the water tube grommet, folding it over somewhat which effectively creates a shut off valve.

How long does the engine run before this problem takes place?

ok that sounds like it makes sense. no the horn does not sound but the motor overheated when the pump went out and I used the troli motor to get back to the landing and only ran it for a short time to get it on the trailer. It does it immediately when you start it when the motor is cold. I had it hooked up to muffs today and it pumps water and doesnt get hot. i can go back and hit the linkage to the carbs and it does it. same if its in gear or nuetral. sound right?

I've read over all of the above posts twice. What am I missing here? Am I overlooking something?

You say "Well guys that's what it was"...... What is what it was?

The problem was what you said it was. I unplugged the harness where it goes into the block for engine temp and it runs perfect. Granted I will be having the horn/alarm fixed since it never made a sound that it was overheating. Sorry for the confusion and thanks again for the help.
