Hello guys, have a problem with my Johnson 50hp outboard. It has sat for about 5 years, pulled out of storage to get ready for fishing season and of course it won't start. I have a inline spark tester on the plug, kill switch clip in place, no spark. Disconnected main red plug on the engine and jumped the solenoid, no spark. Have a parts motor laying in garage changed coil, no spark. Any help guys I'm clueless when it comes to testing the stator.

Here is my stator off my donor motor, same thing that is on the one I'm working on.

In my experience which is limited rarely is this a stator problem. Usually you see a weak spark or intermittent spark with a stator issue. If you have no spark on all cylinders I would try the simple stuff. Does the spark tester work. Is the kill switch stuck. Sat for 5 years. Did mickey eat a wire. Are the connections tight. If I had to start testing components I would go to my factory manual. One piece of advice I am sure of is that you need a manual if you are going to work on any outboard. Ebay is the place to get them. Best thing I ever bought for my motor. Wish I could be more help. Hopefully the pros here will chime in.

Is your battery fully charged? Engine must turn over at 200-300- rpm to enable stator to produce ignition spark, possible worn starter? Bad cables? Bad or unclean connections? Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I have been to cdi electronics, and it's a very informative site. But my stator wire colors don't match the ones given in the Johnson section. I'm going to call them today.

I'm certain my spark tester is good, as I tried it on my mower and it did as it's supposed to.
Brand New battery , I really think the motor is turning fast enough to generate spark. As for frayed wires I'm still searching. Thanks for any input guys

I found the component in front of the arrow to be shorted/melted. Local boat shop had a replacement, for cheap. Hope it works! My issue is connecting it. Engine side has 2 - brown/ yellow wires, while the component has a solid brown and one brown/yellow wire. What is the correct way to hook it up?

I will be doing the cdi upgrade later this summer for sure!
