"hi guys i'm new and am needing some help. i searched around and found some info that i need but still have some questions. i was cruising down the missippi river after just building a boat blind for it, for a trial run before duck season, and it died on me. tried starting it up and it did nothing. let it sit for a little while, and got it started back up and looked back there and the motor isnt peeing anymore, there is a little water coming out of the exhaust but thats it. i'm thinking that it is just the impeller, or hoping at least for now. so now i am needing some instructions on how to do this. i dont have my manual for it yet but will be getting that soon(if i can figure out where to buy one), just wanted to get started on it asap. i assume it shouldnt be too hard, but any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks again."

"thank you, i'll be orderi

"thank you, i'll be ordering that for sure. anyone know off hand so i can get started on this...i have a duck hunt tomorrow and would much rather be in my boat instead of standing in 3-4 feet of flooded cornfields in my waders."

"damn, i got everything apart

"damn, i got everything apart and the new impeller is on, but now i cant get the lower unit on. seems like the driveshaft isnt going in all the way. i need the lower unit to got about 1/4 of an inch more to make it all fit up and bolt on. any ideas?"

Keith refresh my memory here.

Keith refresh my memory here. What type of shifter do you have onb this motor. And did you put any grease on top of the drive shaft. If you did them you might have to much and its preloading the shaft in the block. If this motor has the shifter on the side of the motor try moving the shifter in another position and see if it will give you any slack.

"it is on the side, but i have

"it is on the side, but i have already tried putting the shifter in another position, doesnt work. everything slides into place perfectly the about .25" until the lower unit meets, it hits something and wont go any farther. that is why i was thinking it was the driveshaft hitting something. but the driveshaft seems to be going where it needs to go. another question, i have the driveshaft and impeller in place and have bolted it back down, but if i turn the driveshaft, the prop doesnt turn. is that normal? it seemed like everything set perfectly in the lower unit."

If you had the lower unit in n

If you had the lower unit in nutrel when disconnected the shift lever then it should not turn. The prop should turn freely. did you disconnect the shift rod at the top or in the joint where the lower unit bolts up to the housing. I haven't worked on the later models in quiet some time so I am trying to feel this out with you.

"i disconnected it at the the

"i disconnected it at the the joint in the lower unit. wouldnt i be able to push or pull it into gear where i disconnected it? i did drop it when it was in nuetral, but i would think that i could put enough pressure where that joint is that i could put it in gear."

If it has the connector that h

If it has the connector that has the two screws or bolts in it I would check it and see if the shift rod is slid all the way into the groove. If you don't take the bolt all the way out then the little ball like shape on the end of the rod can't get all the way into the groove. That would give you about a 1/4 of and inch that would keep the lower unit from going all the way up.

"got it all together. thanks f

"got it all together. thanks for all the help. there is a little plastic cover on the driveshaft that has a notch in it that will only let it go in a certain way, i moved that around to the correct position, i moved up a little, then i spun the driveshaft to get the teeth to go together and it popped right into place. thanks again."

Alright glad you got it togeat

Alright glad you got it togeather.
Now go fishing. OOpppsss you said you were duck hunting. Well a boat beats wading anytime.

Keith here is a break down of your bloch and if you will look at item number 16 that is the t-stat and where it sets in the head.
Hope this helps"

Are you trying it on muffs or in a barrel of water.
I have seen some that wouldn't get enough water on muffs. Try sticking it down in a trash can filled with water.

"Keith
Now that you know how to take off the lower unit, take it off again. Find the "water tube" that comes from the motor and goes into the water pump housing. Fit a piece of hose to the tube and blow into the hose. Is the air passing through? If not, it is not likely that water will pass. If so, you will have to take off the covers around the water jacket (on exhaust and cyl.head) and clean. Maybe you also have to take off the power head to free the passage.
On the other hand, if you have a free passage when blowing into the tube: Make sure that the tube fits into the pump housing, and that the seal is in order.
You haven't happen to forget the impeller key?
good luck
Robert"

"alright guys, its a pissing machine. put the muffs on it instead of the bucket of water and it was peeing like a champ. thanks for all the help. what are signs of a bad tstat? i'm sure it would be good for me to replace it b/c it has been awhile, but its seems to be running good now, so are there any signs that would let me know that the stat is bad?"

Take your hand and put it on t

Take your hand and put it on the top of the block about where the t-stat is installed and if you can hold it there for a little while before it gets uncomfortable it should be ok.
Watch for discoloration around the water jacket and put you hand under the tell tale stream and it should be good and warm but not scalding hot.
