Hi All,
I've been on other forums before but I'm not able to find what I need so I wanted to give Marine Engine a shot.
A few weeks ago I had my boat out and it started acting up. I had to have the controls pressed slightly towards the gunnel wall in order to get the motor to start (recognize Neutral). This worked for a while until one time I came down from WOT and the motor shut off. After this, I wasn't able to start it again right away. I had seen signs my battery was failing so I replaced it and after a couple tries I was able get it started. after a while of moving rather slow through a no wake the motor stalled again and I wasn't able to restart. Waited an hour or two and then tried to start it again and it would fire up and then died within a few seconds. It would always crank, but only get spark on occasion to turn it over.
When I brought it home, I charged the battery and ran muffs on it in the driveway. It fired right up. We decided to take an afternoon ride where we put it in and ran flawlessly until I brought it down from WOT again. At that point it died and we were never able to get it started again. When I got it home, I tried it a few times and eventually the starter burned up. I replaced the started and tried to start troubleshooting again. There was a short in the ignition so I replaced that as well. Got around to testing the spark and there was no spark on any cylinder so I replaced the kill switch. I put the muffs on and it fires up runs great for a while, then I shut it down and started it up a few more times. Everything worked well but there was a knock in the motor that I don't recall hearing before but there is a very good chance it was covered up by the cowling and the noise from the older motor.
So last night, I took it out, it fired right up and drove it for 5 or 10 minutes at low speeds. Shut it down to do fish a little. After about an hour, I went to start it up and it would crank but not fire. I decided to wait it out again and see what happened after an hour or two. After waiting, it would fire up a few times but wouldn't stay running for more than a few seconds unless the throttle lever was up. Eventually it started acting the same as it did in the beginning where I Had to have the controls in the exact right spot to get spark. I opened them up and tightened down the neutral switch. Upon doing that it started to spark again right away. then when we pulled up to head home, we ran into the same issue where it would spark and die right away unless the throttle lever was up all the way and eventually stopped turning over at all again.
Compression was tested and all of them tested at 130ish (Per the local shop).
Sorry for the book but wanted to make sure I covered it all.
Anyone have thoughts on where to start this time around?
