92' 70hp johnson water pump shifting rod disconnect?

Trying to change the water pump. I know I need to somehow disconnect the shifting rod, and i see where it connects. Question is, do I have to take off the carburators to be able to disconnect it? I don't see any way to get it apart. Seems like there should be a simpler way, that I'm not seeing. I had some one tell me there is a set screw close to where the rod makes a couple 45 degree bends, but I dont see one, and even if I did, I dont see how you would get to it.

Remove screw #16 that goes through the shift rod.

thanks, I seen that in the diagram. problem is, i cant see it on the actual motor. Do I have to take off the carbs to get to it?

No, you find it under the carbs if looking from port side.

Remove the hitch pin on the starboard side ----------------then push the bellcrank in and the shift rod is disconnected.------Hardly no tools required at all.

Absolutely wrong there, I took a 1988 ---3 cylinder model apart yesterday and an 89 --4 cylinder too , both had the " hitch pin " so there. !!!!!!!!!

I guess when there are discrepancies between the map and terrain, the terrain rules.
