"I went to purchase a new stat

"I went to purchase a new stator today & the sales person told me they didn't have the new omc # part but they had the one before the number change. The old number was 0584287, the new # is 0763765. Does anyone have any idea why the number change and if it will be ok to use it on my motor. The sales people didn't know why the # changed just that they had had the old numbered part since 1994. Wonder if there were some improvements or what for this stator?"

the reason for the new number is either thay have attempted to make improvements or as simple as the changed the plant locations

"Thanks guys for responding! Doug, I checked around and the distibutor for all the boat dealers around here doesn't have the CDI # 173-4287 in stock. It will be the middle of next week,MAYBE before it is supposed to be in. The cheapest I can find here is $349.99 for that one. The new OMC part is $389.99, while the sales person said they would sell me the old OMC # for $220.00. Times are hard & money is tight. I'm not questioning your experience, but money talks right now. If you think I should be leery of the old one I'll wait for the CDI to come in.I really appreciate your time and advice, Thanks, Jeff"

I recommend different manufactures for reasons but non of that matters when they are not in stock also I am out of stock of the cdi part if I am out that often means their is a back order which my take more that a few weeks

"That's fine. But, and there always is one, you are looking at a shelf item that is ten years old. It is the original design, and your post indicated that you wanted to know how and why part numbers change. Well, design improvements is one reason. And, since CDI is a fine reputable manufacturer of these parts, I have to believe that they will send you a new, modern designed, optimized with the technology (so to speak) part, modern coil core materials, etc., and you will not need to worry about why the ten year old part from your dealer's shelf changed part numbers.

I THINK...I am not sure...but CDI stators ...I seem to remember seeing pics of them where the coils are open...exposed...with no potting compound. This would let the stator cool better. I bet the original OMC is potted in black potting compound. Could be a simple reason for the part number change right there....

That's why the 220.00 price; they are wanting to move that old shelf item....

All the above is why I quickly fired off a recommendation to just buy a CDI, and I did a Google on just the part number, 173-4287, to get that price. Found tons of retailers selling them. Iboats price was 300.00.

Anyway...get it in the H2O.....it should work just fine.

Oh, by the way...PLEASE post back with the results of the stator swap. I really want to know if it fixed or improved your issues."

"I can get on the water now, I just might have to use my electric trolling motor to get back. Ha!I really appreciate you guys. I'm not sure the stator is bad. One old boat mech. said he's seen the leakage off he stator and it not have anything wrong with it. maybe someone can tell me how to check the stator to see if it's working properly? I'm ok with mechanical stuff but electronics is a whole nother ball game for me. Can't afford to just change some parts to see if that fixes it or not.If the thing checks out ok I'm not going to go to all the trouble to get that $%^^&*( flywheel off!!!"

I guess I was just hoping someone could say for positive that there weren't any issues with the old one,since it is so much cheaper.
