Can anyone clearly in easy to understand words? Explain what a stater does and why do so many Mercs have problems with them and why in Australia it cost so much to replace something that seems to fail on every Merc ever made. After replacing my last 175hp Merc engine due to bad electrics stater and carbs which in repairs added up to a small fortune. Which was also by the way too big for the hull and nothing more than a noisy boat anchor. Not so noisy as you could never get it to run all that often. I now have a 2004 90hp Merc which was a much better fit and after some shake down problems has been a ok unit. Until today. Yes no spark at all it seems. 2kms from home after a couple hours of average work which it had cooled down from. Check fuel seems good. Which when you turn the engine over and get not so much as a cough sounds electrics again. The great old stater. If someone can explain what that ugly word means please. i would be greatful. Its a two stoke engine for god sake. Not a rocket engine.
