"2001 Boston whaler, 90hp merc. will not Start. when turning the ignition key, it will not turn over, motor just clicks. Battery is good, all gauges work when key is engaged. the motor will turn over intermittenly, but will not start. This started this fall while out fishing however, after 1 or 2 trys the turn of the key would turn the engine over and start. The boat has sat for a few weeks now, and the problem has got worse, whereas, the boat will not start, and 1 out of every 100 turns of the key will even turn it over. Does this sound like the starter? NEED HELP, more snow is on the way."

"To find out if the starter is

"To find out if the starter is faulty, use a jumper cable directly from a battery on the starter (car jumper cables). If the problem remains, it is inside the starter.
Disassemble the starter and find out if there is a problem inside.
I had a starter where the springs for the brushes had corroded and almost disappeared. I replaced them (just simple coil springs, doesn't seem to be sold as a spare part). The brushes and copper "braids" (not sure about the word) can be bad (can probably be bought as spare parts). Also be sure to clean the brush area from graphite dust, as it is conductive.

"Mariner/Merc 50hp 3cyl 2stroke engine No OB343053 has run/started fine since fitted. Kept in garage and home serviced. Failed to start last trip, turns over great- getting fuel-getting a spark on all plugs (hard to tell if spark sufficient due to permagap type plugs). Engine did not attempt to fire at all no coughs/splutters etc. Could anyone offer any suggestions please."
