Hi all,
I'm new here...first post. Been reading and have found lots of good info. So much good info I decided to tackle rebuilding my carbs on a 1999 90 HP Mercury. First I bought a manual and reviewed it and this forum until I was ready. I found it easy to remove the carbs, linkages and fuel lines. Rebuilding the carbs was not hard at all. During the rebuilding process I found that the middle carb had a broken throttle shaft, I thought this was obviously why I was so down on power half way through my last outing. I decided to replace the carb with a new one after seeing the price for just the shaft. I am assuming that everything was not linked and sync'd properly and it caused stress on the middle shaft and snapped it at the butterfly. Finally to my question.....while removing the carbs the top two carbs were held on with studs and nuts the bottom one uses bolts....three of the studs came out when removing the nuts. Should I remove the nuts from the studs and put the studs back in the block and if so what should I coat the studs with? It also looks like it is going to be tight getting the bottom bolts back in, does it make it easier if you remove the bottom shroud or is that just extra work?
