9091 50hp force wont start

i hope you can help me out, im new to boating and i am having some problems with my 50hp force outboard.

i was out in it today and when i was cleaning it down and went to flush through with fresh water it wouldnt start. it seems to be winding the starter motor but thats all. should the cog at the end of that be engaged with the fly wheel for starting? it just seems to be spinning and making no attempt to start.

any help would be much appreciated

I had a similar problem with m

I had a similar problem with mine.It turned out to be a bad ground.It seems you are not getting enough juice through your starter.It could also be a weak battery.Your starter may be getting weak.I would start with the ground connections and the battery and go from there.

thanks for your suggestions. i checked the battery initially and put the booster pack on it but with no joy. with regards the ground connections - if there was a bad connection/no connection would it be doing anything at all?

did you have any trouble with the ignition coils? sparking? or even carbs? it seems to me that its likely to be an ignition problem but to what extent im really not sure.

if you have any other suggestions i would really like to hear them

"Bad ignition components will not keep the starter from working.It has its own circuit through the starter relay.You will find this near the electrical connections in your motor.The circuit goes like this:from the battery to the starter relay to the starter to ground.Check all these connections.Not only for how tight but also how clean they are.If all the connections are good,then connect your booster directly to your starter.The ground cable to a good ground connection and the red cable to the bolt on your starter.If the starter engages the flywheel,then you probably have a bad battery cable."

on another point (as you can tell im new to boating) how much water should there be coming out the exhaust holes when the motor is running? mine only really spits water out (no steady flow)

Just to be clear,did you have any other problems such as overheating?You can usually tell by looking around the motor for any discolouration,especially around the cylinders.You may even want to look at the wires that come out of the stator(under the flywheel)for any damage to the insulation.This would be another indicator that there was overheating in the past.Remember that a new impeller is a necessary evil.A damaged or old one can take all the fun out of boating!!Take it from me,i learned the hard way.Now for your question about the water from the exhaust.Obviously the more water comes out,the more cooling you are getting.Mine just spits as well,but it is almost a stream.It all depends how good the impeller,how clean the water pathways etc.If you are worried or if you feel that the water that is coming out is very hot,take it to a marina and have it checked out,dont ignore this.A little pain now could save you a fortune!"

thanks for the help with this. it seems as though oiling the starter shaft has helped to cure the fault and well i'll know where to start the next time. thanks gain yous have been a great help
