"I have a early 80's 90 hp

"I have a early 80's 90 hp mariner that, when running on the hose muffs, the tell tail only starts to flow after the motor has been running for say 30-45 seconds. is this normal? also the flow is quite intermitant at idle but stronger at low revs. I am going to change the water pump but want to know what "normal" should be so when done I know it is working right."

"Neil, you say early 80's

"Neil, you say early 80's model - is this an inline 6 cylinder or 3 cylinder model?"

"graham, I have only just purc

"graham, I have only just purchased the motor and I though it was 6 cyl as it has 6 inline plugs however I beleive it may be a 2 cycle 3 cylinder as this is stated on a sticker under the cowling."

there are 6 plugs (In line

there are 6 plugs (In line)_ I had it for all money pegged as 6 cyliners however the guy I bought it off said it was a 3 cylinder. I dismissed this however when I took the cowell off I found a sticker that states 3cyl 2 cycle.

"Somebody had been playing wit

"Somebody had been playing with the motor.

An inline 6 should have a steady flow all the time - of course a little stronger as the rpms increase (which in turn increase the water pressure).

Since this motor is new to you and from that one sticker in particular you can not trust what "some guy" is telling you about the motor, at minimum I would:

replace the water pump impeller
replace the lower unit gear oil
replace the spark plugs

inspect all lines, hoses and wires for rot/fray/holes/worn or missing coatings etc

Get a can of Merc "Powertune" - about 5 bucks for a spray can and follow the directions on the can - gets the carbon and other cooties out."

Thanks . doing the impellor an

Thanks . doing the impellor and gearbox oil and plugs today. Thanks for the tip on the power tune. will do that to. PS I think the sticker is related to the power packs as I see there are two with each servicing 3 cylinders
