90 HP Mercury/Mariner??

Hi all....

I am new to this forum, AND new to boating. My dad gave me a boat/motor/trailer that isn't in bad condition, but does need a little bit of work. So time to start at the beginning...

How can I identify what year motor I have??? I could not find any serial numbers on the inside to save my life. Here is what I can tell you.

It has a Mercury cover, but for some reason my dad said that it may be a Mariner, and just has the Merc cover. Not sure either way.
It is 90HP.
It is a straight 6 cylinder engine.
It has Power Trim
It is 2 cycle (not oil injected)

That is about all I can tell you. If you need a number that would be somewhere on the engine, if you can tell me where to look, I will do so and get back to you.

Post a picture.------Best guess here is that it is an early / mid 1980's motor.-------Not a bad motor but more expensive to rebuild than a 3 cylinder motor.

Thanks in advance. Remember, it may still be a Mariner, even though it has a Merc cover. Hopefully you guys will be able to tell the difference.

Many of these motors had a decal / sticker on the swivel bracket.------Not very durable in certain environmental conditions.

There used to be model # with stamped / engraved plates on motors when manufacturers cared.----Those days are long gone !
