90 hp mercury hard to start

I have a 90hp mercury 2 stroke which is really hard to start after sitting for a few days, once started it will start every time after that unless you let it sit for 30 mins then it is hard to start again and you get a big puff of smoke.
It runs great out on the water when going. Has anyone had this problem or have any ideas how to fix this.
To me it seems like there is a oil leak somewhere there.
It is oil injected.
SN is 9527181 which i carnt find the year for it any where.

You might be able to improve on your starting procedure.-----------Outline in some detail what you do to start the motor.

I have a 1988 Merc 90 that I presume is similar to yours. I had trouble starting mine until I learned the correct procedure (for my engine)

Pump Bulb until very hard
Turn Key to ON and push key in for 5 secs then while still pressed in, turn to START
Leave the Idle lever DOWN until she fires, and then move it up a little to aid cold idling.
For the first 30 secs after she has started, you may need to press the key in again briefly if she starts to die
Once warmed up, you can return idle lever to DOWN and use engine like normal.

If she doesn't fire after holding key in for 5 secs, start procedure again, but hole key in for 10 secs....


This works for my engine. This is presuming your engine is in good order (carbs cleaned and tuned, compression OK)

Let me know how this goes.

ps take another close look at your serial, that will give us the year of the engine etc
 
hey guys, my starting procedure is the same as above.
Just tryed it again with no luck, About 10 mins to get it to fire and still the puff of smoke. grrrr
The SN is correct, just checked it again... All i got is 9527181 and made in belgium.
