90 HP Merc Saltwater 2001

I want to replace the impeller but the problem is lining up the shift shaft with the shift collar. The last time I did it it took 2 days of frustration. Should it be in gear when I take it apart?

The service manual suggests that you put it into "forward" gear and tilt the motor all the way up into the "trailer" position...

I suggest that you unhook the cable and push the block forward minus ~ a 1/4".
Set the case in forward, but no further than that. The shaft will keep turning until it is 180 out.
Turn the prop shaft until the drive spline grabs.
