I have a 90 hp evinrude that

I have a 90 hp evinrude that starts but when I engage either forward or reverse it dies. I have tried to give it power but it will not run. I can engage the forward or reverse and turn the flywheel freely. the prop turns and I cannot feel any rough spots. It does not seem to be the lower unit. It is about 500 rpm idling. Can anyone help.

Do a compression test to look

Do a compression test to look for major damage.Then again the motor should idle at 600rpm in gear so you might have to bump up the idle stop.

" I've got a 1987 70hp Evinrude with the same problem, I can get it to go if I put the choke on a bit 'cos its running lean just above idle. I've been told to adjust throttle linkages and butterflies to fix it but havn't had a chance yet.

" I have a 94 Mercury Tracker Pro Series 60 hp doing the same thing...It started after I just about ran out of gas....after putting in the new gas, it ran fine until I had to shut it down for the no-wake sign and then it died....The mechanic has not looked at it yet but he thinks it could be carburator (3 of them) need to be rebuilt...probably got some junk in them from the tank...will let you know what he finds out, taking it in tomorrow...will be next week before he gets to it. "
