90 hp 2-stroke stalls when shifting from forward to reverse

Hello all,
Hope someone could help I have a 90 hp 2 stroke outboard motor model# J90TLCTE which I believe is a 1983 model year. The problem I am having is it will stall when shifting from forward to reverse making docking very difficult, this only happens in the water but not when hooked up to the muffs. I have had a boat mechanic check it out and was not very helpful. Sorry for the long post.

Correct an 83 model.-----They all sound " perfect " on a hose.----Step # 1 is a compression test.----Then a spark check.-------How long have you owned this motor ?----Did the problem show up suddenly ?

I purchased the boat a year ago and it ran this way from the beginning. We took it to a dealer and they replaced 1 head due to the spark plug threads being stripped, they also replaced a coil and all the plugs but this did not help. They did a compression test and said they cylinders had 110-120 psi? So $700 later and same problem.
Thank you

Some will argue.-----A low cost / high value inspection is to remove the 4 bypass covers.----Inspect pistons and rings.----Gaskets are about $3 each.---6 screws on each cover.

As stated, you really cant tell anything on muffs. I had this issue on a 1990 johnson 90 hp motor. After making sure of your compression on each cylinder and that you have STRONG spark on each, you probably need to look at fuel supply, i.e. a weak fuel pump, clogged jets, air intrusion. In my case, I had warped carb bowls that had to be sanded down to form a good seal. One other thing to check is your timing. I used the Joe Reeves method to set the timing on my motor. An inexpensive thing to try that may help is Johnson Outboard Engine Tuner. Follow the directions on the can. All of these things can be searched in this website and you'll find lots of good info. Good luck!
