90 HP 2 stroke---oil leaking from cowl area?

I have noticed oil spots in the transom area before but this year seems particularly bad. I would guess I have a quarter pint of oil sitting back there. I really don't know if it is leaking into it while I am running it or when it is sitting or both. It smokes allot too. Always has! I have owned it since new in 2003. Any ideas on a fix? Thanks for any help. Appreciated finding this site!

is this a premix motor or do you have a oil tank? Is it 100% oil or is it fuel and oil? Do you have power trim?

2 strokes are known for having oil/ gas come out of the carbs when you trim it all the way up.

Thanks! Appears to be 100% oil and I do have an oil tank on my 2003 90 HP Merc. I do have power trim. I haven't even pulled the cowl off yet to look but wondering if it might just be leaking out of the fill area and getting worse every year?

Try keeping the oil level at about 2/3rds full and monitor oil leakage from the tank..-----Also look at oil line from the oil pump to the fuel pump.

Your dealer will sell you a new gasket for the filler and I do as Racerone said keep it at 2/3 or less.....with a new gasket....just in case. It holds 3 quarts and at 50:1 you can go a ways on the middle quart before you get into the last quart, I call my reserve.

My engines don't leak gas out of the venturis at high tilt angles. The needle valves in the carbs do the job intended.

Check where it is leaking, if the mushroom head and green one- way breather valve is missing it will leak if overfill.
I also fit slight oversized 0'ring on the yellow filler cap (with GREAT success) no more leak.
hope it helps you out, you may need the replace the inner sponge in the cowl, the cowl rubbers end up swelling .
