"Use only Outboard Gear Lube for your lower unit. Penzoil, Citgo, and other name brands are readily available from Walmart type stores or your local boating service / parts store. I've used several different brands with no issues. Mine drains from the bottom (underside) front of the lower unit. I fill at the top side of the lower unit where ther are two plugs together. The front is the fill and the rear is a vent.

DO NOT use automotive differential lube.

After 4 years of sitting around I'd guess the water pump impeller is at best in a weak condition. Typically I replace my impeller every other year or sooner depending on usage.

Heat is your motors worse enemy. I don't trust a hose / muff connection. I'd use a new plastic trash can and submerge the motor leg with the prop removed instead. You won't need to run the motor for a couple hours to find out if it will overheat. When the motor is running you should be seeing a stream of water out the "pee" hole. If you see no water coming out of the "pee" hole after startup your pump may not be pumping. You should have a temperature gage or overheat buzzer to warn you when getting too hot. An infared thermometer can also help determine how hot things are getting (about 30-40 bucks @ harbor freight).

Good luck,
Bring oars and / or trolling motor and your cell phone
Leave the dock against the wind and travel up river first."
