9.9hp 2 stroke mercury water pump kit

Hi,
Can anyone advise me please, i am in the process of fitting a new water pump kit to my son's 1988 mercury 9.9hp 2 stroke motor and the bit that is troubling me is that the guide that attaches to the water pump cover: 42089A2 and then goes onto / over the water tube: 42122 is a very very loose fit....is this normal because i would think that very little water would would actually find it's way into the tube and up to the motor...

Thankyou for your reply, and absolutely as you say the guide tube is tapered inside, but it still feels very loose and sloppy when i push it up onto the end of the water tube !
I would have expected either a larger water tube or a smaller internal taper to the guide in order to form a tighter fit between the two,or some form of rubber seal to help seal the two together...i still feel that a fair bit of the pumped water will simply just pushout around the ill fitting tube..

Also, does anyone know the exact quantity of oil required in the lower case....as i dont have a pump to fill it when assembled, i thought i could put the correct amount in before i carry out the water pump installation..

The water tube goes through the guide....all the way down into the rubber grommet.
There should be a ring near the bottom of the water tube that mates tightly with the
rubber grommet or the guide.

The gearcase takes 6.8 fl. oz. or 200 ml.
I guess you are taking the water pump base off to get the oil in.
It may be quite messy getting things back together....

Brilliant thanks again for your response whitegreg56...there is nothing on the bottom of the water tube, simply the end of the tube.. i wonder if i have something missing, it's definately as i took it apart, there was nothing else on the tube...i didn't actually realise that the tube went right into the rubber of the seal.
Yes i understand it could be messy if i put the oil in prior to assembly, but atleast i now know the correct quantity, so i should be able to get it in there somehow

The I.D. on the seal is less than the I.D. on the guide tube.
You should put some marine grease in the seal or on the end of the water tube.
Here's a photo of the water tube with the ring about an inch up from the end (it appears in the shadow, too).
This ring holds the guide tube in place if the engine is turned upside down.

Ok thanks for the image....my water tube does not have that ring on it...is it a press / shrink fit on the outer of the tube ?.....do you think it would be ok without it, and do as you say, apply some grease to it.
If the tube is a good fit in the rubber seal (which i can check later today) surely it shouldn't be much of a problem should it !

Do yourself a big favour, go down to Wally World & buy one of those gear lube pumps. They are only $9-$10.
You are going to change leg oil again at some point, so save the hassle & mess right from the get go.
Remove both plugs, screw pump into bottom hole & s,only pump til it starts to come out the top. Replace top plug & tighten.
Remove pump fitting & replace bottom plug. Done, almost no mess or waste.
Always replace top plug first, it will almost stop any leakage when you remove the pump.
