9.9 wont run above idle under load

I have a Johnson 9.9 J1FEXEDR 1996 runs great in neutral but once under a load in forward or reverse starts sputtering and seems like have retarded timing....... it has been suggested that it is the stator or coil malfunctioning, but I can't find a replacement for either online....HELP!!!!

Test for strong spark ( 7/16" gap ) on both leads.---------Remove the valve cover and check the rockers !----These motors are known to have a problem there.---Working on one right now to refurbish worn out rockers.----Very easy to check out.----Testing and inspection is the path to take.-----Too many folks are guessing at stuff !!

Your best bet is to do some testing / inspection yourself.------I am not standing beside your motor.--Timing on outboard motors generally does not go out of adjustment !----Does it have spark on both cylinder leads that will fire across a gap of 3/8" or more ?-----You may find that both leads fire at the same time too.
