9.9 won' t go

I've got ths 9.9 hp mercury, that starts at the touch of the key, put it in reverse and back up as much as you like, but the minute you push it to forward, the motor dies. can anybody tell me what's up with this motor?

Pull the prop and see if it has been trying to chew its way into the housing. If you see wear marks, then the front prop spacer-splined washer is missing.
