9.9 w/remote control won’t start

Hey everyone, hopefully someone has some ideas. I have a 1999 9.9hp 2 stroke running off the remote control throttle system on a sailboat. Motor was running great for 2 hours. A big wave was coming so I throttled back to slow down and the engine died. This engine is rock solid and if it’s been running starts right up. It took a lot of pulls before it started again. 15 minutes later same thing happens this time it would never turn over. Starter still engages the engine just never turns over. Now have it off the boat and been doing some digging. Engine has spark, fuel flow seems to be fine also. Kill switch died 2 years ago so that’s fairly new. There was some corrosion in the plugs between the engine and wiring harness. Any thoughts? My thoughts are electrical. Another question, without any rudder controls or the remote control plugged in, will the engine ever start assuming everything is working? As in since there is no on/off switch anymore does the engine have some sort of fail safe that will always prevent it from turning over.

Thanks

Don’t know that model. My little plate with all the info is worn so I had to use that silver cap on the block just to figure out the year. It’s a ‘99. No pictures but if you think pictures will help I can always take some.

Like to see the corrosion. Probably expect some wiring problems. Did it get wet when the wave hit you? Just did one of these....like new but a mouse got in and built a nest, chewed wires and hoses. I cleaned and patched wires, pulled flywheel as moisture from the nest.....including mostly mouse pee.......had caused rust. Ran like a new motor. Sold it for 1200 bucks with my normal 1 year warranty. Guy lives 120 miles away. Texted after the first fishing trip how happy he was with his new motor, including pictures of some nice fish with his son. Next trip out it lost spark....crap! Okay, bring it back. I replaced ALL spark components.....no charge (warranty). He loves it, telling everyone about me now. Love those electronics.....don't you?

I’ll post some pictures tomorrow as the motor is at my shop at work. Other than the corroded female ends of the main wiring harness, everything looks good electronically speaking. The boat is in the Chesapeake and kept in the water so keep that in mind when I do post pics. It’s not a pristine specimen. As for water splashing when we hit the wave, to my knowledge no. Both times the engine dying seemed to stem from throttling back. I’m going to the marina this weekend to pull the remote control to have a look at the wiring inside of that as well.

Here’s a shot of the wiring harness coming out of the motor. It looks like the corroded ports are for the kill switch and the tach... which I dont have

So quick update. Got the motor running today. Turns out it was not electrical as I suspected but instead a carb issue. Still seems to run rough and doesn’t like being at lower RPMs. This is even after taking the carb off and cleaning it out and blowing out all the jets and ports. Any thoughts on what makes it die, or want to at low idle?

I’m some further testing: today after sitting only over night the engine will no longer start. Ether sprayed directly in to the chamber from the spark plug hole yeilds no pop, nor does opening up the throttle and spraying it past the carb. I definitely have spark. Could the spark be weak?
