9.9 Driveshaft groove

I picked up a short driveshaft and shifter for my 9.9 Johnson longshaft off ebay to convert it to a shortshaft. It has a pretty good groove where the waterpump seal rides. The seal "seems" to be good on the shaft but not sure if it will be a problem? Should I go ahead and just put a new seal in the housing or is it a big concern if water does get past? It is a older motor, a 1977 so it does have the o ring at the top of the driveshaft to help seal or I think thats its purpose. Surprised to see a groove wore in there from a rubber seal! A new driveshaft when they can be found is over 200 is why I went used. Motor is all back together and seems fine. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Jim

That top driveshaft "O" Ring is there to keep water out of the spline area... grease those splines thoroughly. This is what prevents the splines from rusting and jamming which in turn prevents the lower unit from being removed.

The pump housing seal.... If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks Joe. This motor looks to have very few hours on it but it is a 1977. The driveshaft that I installed looks to have a lot of wear in the waterpump seal area so I was worried if water got above that that it would create problems. The splines on it were ok top and bottom. I installed a new Oring in the grove for one on the top and greased it well. The long driveshaft that I removed showed no wear in that area but the seal seemed tight on the used driveshaft that has the groove wore into it so hope it will be ok then.
