I understand there are 3 types of ignition systems on these motors, through the years 1974-2002 (or something like that):
1974-1976 : Magneto type with the good ole'points.
1977-1987 CD
1987-2002 (or something like that :)) : CDII

I have never owned a post-87 model and all I was ever able to find on the difference details between "CD" and "CDII" is that it is an "upgrade that took place in 1987.

Can anyone tell me exactly what the difference is in terms of hardware, and eventually share their experience in explaining what did the CDII accomplished better than the CD ignition system?
Thanks!

Too much to explain really. From my point of view, the service manuals would be a better avenue to travel to obtain accurate information of that sort.

1974-76 9.9 & 15 were notorious for poor running. Stay away from them. 1977 got CD ignition which is a good system and helped a lot. At some point thereafter, they got UFI which was still CD, but the power pack was combined with the sensor under the flywheel instead of external as before. I have no experience with those, nor opinion.

A brief explanation (via part manuals) is that through 1987 the power-pack of the 9.9/15 incorporated the external visual power-pack bolted to the power-head....... The 1988 incorporated the power-pack in a different unit and was located on the timer base/armature plate under the flywheel.

The ignition system was still identified as a "Magneto Capacitance Discharge" system.

Sorry "Gator"... Didn't see your reply until later.

Thanks to both.
And I agree, the magneto motors didn't run as good, and my experience with a (now sold) 1976, is that aside from delivering less power than my 1979 (the "keeper"), it loved fouling plugs for some reason.
