9.8 cooling issues

Have a 1979 9.8 merc outboard. Replaced the impeller. When running, I have an intermittent water stream and the lower part of the shaft gets very hot. Do I need to replace the power head base gasket?

If the engine has been run hot before, you may need to replace the small plastic cup washer where the water tube enters the powerhead. They can melt and cause an obstruction. You need to remove the powerhead to gain access.
