8rcob 8hp 1985 starter spring

Is there supposed to be a 90 degree stud on the bottom of the spring to catch in the base plate slot?

Any special way to bend it?

Does the bend face downward or sideways?

The spring usually comes with the bend in it. What's the problem ??
