Looks like your 8 ML serial number is within serial number range 677-352106 - 677-367080 which makes it an 1981 engine year.Hi Graham, I too have just acquired an old motor, Mariner 8 serial 677 352170
I purchased an old Coronet 20 Trailer-sailer as a restoration project and the motor came along with the deal.
I cannot find any suitable owner manual online and want to take the top cover off, check and change as necessary plugs, filters etc. but cannot take the cover off.
I have managed to unclip the cover at the throttle end but thought that it would come off from the prop end to get past the pull start handle. ? Don't want to force and I know I'll get there but maybe you can direct me to where I can find the appropriate owner/ tech manual ?
Any help is appreciated, in advance.
Dennis
The model number that pops up (7008208) while running the serial number shows this one to be a 1978 engine year. Can anyone help with the model year of my 8hp mariner? 8m 677 s052553
Thanks in advance.

The OEM service manual part number would be 90-14679 that fits 8B (677)/W8 (677)/Marathon 8 (677) 9.9C (682)/15C (684)
(I) All serial number ranges.
Hope this helps, good luck.[/You are 'the man'
, thanks. Now I need to find a service manual.]
Thank you so much!!!!
054481 seems to come up as an 1978 MARINER SANSHIN 8 M, Model Number 7008208.Looking for the year and part number for the upper ignition coil on a Mariner 8M 677 S 054481
Okay, my mistake and thanks for the confirmation feedback…I trusted another way to look up parts and it didn’t seem to work out so here is another optional way to look into finding parts for your engine from mariner though hopefully boscoe will also share his parts sources as well to help give you an additional option. Thanks for the quick reply but the part you have listed has 1 coil for both cylinders. My 8M has 2 coils, 1 for upper cylinder and 1 for lower cylinder. Stamped on it is CM61-26. Only other #'s on it are A U 306. Found some parts with this # but I'm just trying to make sure I'm buying the right part

I came across this site and hope you can fill in some info I'm trying to find. I recently retired and find a local little John boat to float the river and fish . I think it's a Mariner it's manu plate say M8 647 s28172 . When I start it in a test tub, it runs fine for about 2 minutes and then dies, although I still have fuel present. I am thinking I have bad coil packs. Can you tell me the model yr and if my assumptions are correct and if I can get coil packs for it. Thanks in advance. Are you sure the last part is 514522 and not 314522?
The serials starting with "5" were used on Electric Start (from factory) long shaft motors and they didn't make any in this model run. Those starting with "3" would be a manual longshaft which is otherwise indicated in your number:
8 - horsepower
M - manual (rope start)
L - longshaft
6G1 - Yamaha identifier making it "mechanically" a 1982 C model Yamaha
L - reiterates it's a longshaft (20" transom)
514522 (again suspect 314522) would make it a 1985 Mariner "C" model (last year of production was 1986 and Yamaha only made their own C model for a single year, 1982, so has been orphaned for a while).
Can you confirm that the data plate is showing 647?I came across this site and hope you can fill in some info I'm trying to find. Boscoe, sorry for taking so long to reply. I have a pic I took of the Manu. plate, but your site is telling me your server says the file is to big, so I tried zipping the folder to reduce the size and it didn't like that either. The sticker says Mariner 8 647 S 28172 . I tried replying to your return mail you sent me back earlier and got a reply back that I needed to respond in the forum, which I have done. The pic opens up in the reply I sent back to your return email , if you can access it, or we might be able to come up with another way , maybe a text message with an attachment.
