8hp Johnson starts while in gear

Hello marine engine land

Just got my motor back from the shop and found out the hard way that the motor starts while in gear. The shifter also does not have 3 distinct positions anymore. It has another "click" halfway between reverse and neutral. The shop wants me to bring it back, but the sun is shining!

Can anybody help? Thanks
 
The model # is ??------------Some 8 HP motors will start in gear !---------Some may have an interlock that prevents the recoil starter from operating if throttle is advanced too far.-------So they may in fact start in gear at idle.-----You have to check these thing out.
 
OK OK , now that YOU have posted that it is a 1994 model I can help---------------That motor does have the start in nuetral only feature on the recoil ( earlier models did not ) so what work was done on it ??-----------That motor does not have a clutch dog like earlier models had.---------May have confused the mechanic if not experienced.---------------I would say " do not run it " take it back for them to come good on repair work.-----Had one of those to look at a few years ago with a " no forward condition "------------Quickly determined that someone was in there before me.---------The forward " drive balls " were not there for some reason. Possibly lost on shop floor / cleaning tank or mechanic did not know how it went together !-----Have them check it out !
