"Arg! This motor is driving me nuts, just about ready to repower and end the headache!
This motor (89' Johnson 90 hp vro) came to me on as the original equipment on a small fishing boat I bought last summer. Had been well maintained up until 2007, but sat since then. I clean the carbs and replaced plugs, and she fired right up and ran great until a fishing trip this spring. Started stalling at idle RPM's, and got to a point where it would only run with fast idle up.
Pulled the carbs again and cleaned them, installed new float valves/needles. Ran perfect (but had an annoying fuel leak, which I've sort of fixed).
However, on the river yesterday the idle problem reappeared. The motor started right up in the morning, ran great almost all day. In the evening when we went to pull anchor, the idle issue was back. Popped and skipped at idle, stalled when put into gear and run at low RPM's. After letting the motor run with fast idle up for a while (2-3 minutes) we got it running enough to pull anchor and head to the dock. Ran great all the way in, plenty of power and never missed a beat.
Getting it on the trailer was a nightmare, however. It absolutely would not run at idle, period. Died each time fast idle was dropped and I tried to put it into gear at low RPM (though it would run if rev'd up in gear).
Pulled the spark plugs this morning, and they looked perfect. Hooked it up to the hose pipe and started it in the drive way. Started right up, popped and skipped a little until it warmed up, the idled like a top! Used fast idle for maybe 15 seconds to get it going, that was it.
What gives? I have two theories.
One is that ethanol and age have taken their toll on the VRO/fuel pump, and I've got air coming in.
The other is that something is up with the thermostats. I pulled those hoses from the thermostats to the heads this afternoon, and found this weird rubbery reddish brown goo in them. Had the consistency of teflon tape, all stretched out. Any idea what this could be?
Anyone have any ideas as to what else might be causing this problem? I've put 60-70 hours on the old motor since I got it, and it has always run great, with the exception of this stalling issue at low RPMs."
