Does this motor have a thermostat? There is no water coming out of the upper water went. Doesn't seem to run hot. Do I need to worry?

Do you mean the telltale water stream? Might be a spider nest in the hose...run a coat hanger thru it. Pull the hose off at the engine to see if water shoots out. When was the impeller last replaced? Don't know if it has a T'stat...provide a SN so we can look it up.

If that motor has TWO carbs, they came from the factory with a T-stat. That said, of the dozens of Merc triples (two carbs variety) I've taken apart, not one had the t-stat still in it--they were all removed by the dealers. That should tell you something!

The impeller in these motors is too small, and Merc stupidly pumped part of the critically needed cooling water through the fuel pump, to temperature condition the fuel. (On my and my customer's triples I block that flow off.) The result was overheating of the top cylinders. Of the dozen or so triples go through my shop, only ONE did not have a fried top piston--only one!

Obviously, adding a sticky T-stat only added to the problem, so the dealers removed them. They SHOULD have also blocked off that wasted water flow as well, but...
