"Can anybody tell me where the pilot assist screw is on my 1989 (probably) 15 hp Mercury outboard? I have the manual (1989 Brunswick Corp)and there is a weak illustration on page 10, item 7. Is it port-side, starboard side? Thanks for any help you can give."

"Greg, to put aside the sometimes confusing port/starboard

Should be on the right hand side as you are looking at the front of the motor (carb end)..."

"Graham,

Thanks for this.

"Graham,

Thanks for this. I'll have a look-see. I actually think I know the screw but found it kinda half-hidden behind something that made it hard to get a screwdriver on it, and then I couldn't get more than a quarter turn clockwise which didn't tighten the steering at all. I will try again. thanks for your interest."

"Yes, it's kinda in a dimple right behind the reverse locking mechanism.

That screw presses on a very small metal plate which then presses on a (kinda plastic) bushing.

The bushing often cracks and the little plate slips a bit making the whole thing quite ineffective (and a major pain in the butt to change out).

If you pull the screw (bolt) out and replace it with one just a touch longer (from any hardware store) you can restore some of it's function."
