89 johnson gt 200 problems

lil bit

New member
Ok guys. Ihave an 89 Johnson gt 200 with a couple issues. They may or may not be related. First is when we crank it in the water she will cough and sputter and die. Bump the choke a few times and we can over co me this.. second issue. Lower unit froze over the winter. Replaced that and now she wont comeup on plane. She just sticks her nose in the air reaching only reaches about 3100 rpms. If I move towards the front of the boat and hubby puts full throttle she will eventually pull rpms up and plane out.

We have done compression test all reading right at 90
We have cleaned carbs very thoroughly
Primer bulb is pumping and staying firm

Please help me fix my girl her finickyness makes it hard on tournament days!!

It could be better. I would use a h90+ octane fuel.

Did you get the correct gear ratio? What do the spark plugs look like? Are all plugs firing? Test each plug wire end w/a spark gap tester. Check all of the fuel lines...24 years is a long time...they could be deteriorated internally and restricting fuel flow.

Gear ratio is correct. Fuel lines have all been replaced (sorry I should have put that in there) on the spark plugs they all looked good but 2 weren't as wet as the others.
We were told that a different prop may help with coming out of the hole.

Yes, a 4 blade really helps the hole shot but reduces top end performance. You are not going to get much improvement w/90 PSI compression. The engine is tired. Verify the spark is strong on every cylinder then go from there.

We have a 4 blade renegade on it right now. Not sure of the pitch right off tho. As for the compression it has been at around 90 since we bought this motor a few years ago. We do comp checks at least twice a year if not more (when u have one bite the dust on u I guess u get a little nervous) before lower unit froze we had no issue coming out of the hole and popping right up on plane.

I could be wrong here, but I don't think 90 psi is bad for compression at all. I've found that most of the bigger loopers were low comp. engines to start with. My 92 200 XP Evinrude is right at 90 psi, and it pushes my Charger SK at 80 mph at 6,400 rpm.
