89 Evinrude air filter?

There are threads in front of the carburetor like there is supposed to be something like a filter is supposed to be there but mine doesn't have anything covering the opening and i cant find a good picture to confirm yes or no.

Is there supposed to be something there and if so what is it called.

No filter shown in parts book.-----The carburetor body may well be used on other models that do use an air box / silencer.

Some of the lower HP OMC motors did not have a silencer. I had a 2000 25HP that did not and I looked high and low for parts diagrams to find the parts I needed. Turns out OMC decided it wasn't needed on some models.

I can't say for certain about your 1989 Johnson 25HP, but if you look at the parts diagram it doesn't show one.
