had the altnaters bench tested they are putting out 14.5 volts and 40 amps @ idle. my gage is reading less than 12 (and dummy light is flickering) on the back of alt im reading .5 on one and .8 on the other running or not. on the back of the alt there is a fuseable link connected from power source out to a ground screw on the alternater. the power out of the alt goes to a aluminum finned distribution source also connected to the converter (charger). when I turn on thr converter and turn the key on I get 13 volts on the dash gage

thx 200toncapt but i traced it and figured out that the prev owners mechanic clipped the exciter wire from the harness now why would they do that / morons or something thx again, ken detroit river boater

Fusible links are NOT connected in this manner - well they could be but not for long.

could be a diode based isolator - depending upon where the sense lead of the alternator is hook up, that could be a contributor, too.

found the exciter wire cut @ the coil on both motors / why would someone do that / did not have 12 volts to kick start the alt.
