If it were not for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all with outboard motors. I have an 89 classic fifty that won't start. I have rebuilt the carbs and replaced all fuel lines. After doing so the motor worked great until the safety tilt switch went bad. I traced that down and removed and once again the motor was running great at idle and full throttle as well as starting easily. I went to use it this weekend and it would not start. It tried to start twice but mostly just turned over. Timing light confirms all cylinders are getting spark and visual check confirms carbs are getting gas. Dad ran the tests from the CDI troubleshooting guide and thinks the trigger may be the problem. While checking it out yesterday before I came home I noticed a yellow wire going under the flywheel was chaffed so I taped it up as well as a blue wire that had a crack in the insulation that I taped up. Will a bad trigger cause spark that is out of time with the fuel delivery? Also if bad gas was itroduced(ie water in gas) would that cause it not to start at all?

"put a timing light on #1 and check for spark and timing. Check trigger resistance from the cdi web site. Remove black/yellow wire at powerpack, it kills the ign from the key switch. Any chaffed wire under the flywheel is going to be bad news, something caused it to chafe"
