i was heading out on the bay w

i was heading out on the bay when boat completly died - no spark. i changed everything including coil still no spark. i have 12v going to coil wire when not on the coil but only 5.6v when it is hooked up. points and everthing is set right as i changed them last year and thought that may be the problem so i changed them again. still no luck. tried jumping the safety lanyard to see if that was the problem.

"where are you checking for spark? out of the coil? or at 1 of the plugs? If you are checking at the plug, then check to see if the timing belt broke and if the distributor is turning or not. (take dist cap off and crank engine)"

"i am checking both coil and #

"i am checking both coil and #1 plug. timing belt is good. should power on wire to coil drop 7v soon as i hook it up? last spring boat wouldn't start so i replaced cap, rotor, points and condensor. did same thing this year. when running at full throttle this year it did have a occasional miss that i thought at time was bad gas."

"sounds like the coil may be the issue...(EDIT - I see you changed it....) A full 12V would eventually ruin the coil but for 60 seconds or so will not hurt. As far as 7V, seems a bit low ..maybe your resistance wire is having issues..where do you have the ground lead of your meter though? It should really be on the (-) terminal of the coil...then you can watch the V drop across the coil...should be about 9 or 10V with the points closed and zero V with the points open...what you can do is take the dist cap off... rotate the engine until the points are closed...then use a little plastic stick or something to work the points cam..as you open the points this way, the field in the coil collapses and the spark should occur at the coil wire. a bit easier and quieter than cranking the engine"

oh hey...that 12V you are seei

oh hey...that 12V you are seeing...is that during cranking? or just with the key on? that could be the issue if it's 12V with just key on... shorted resistance wire might have burned out both coils...should be about 9 or 10V once you release the key from the crank position back to run

i have 5.6v at coil with key o

i have 5.6v at coil with key on and 10.3v when cranking engine. tried moving points and with spark checker at coil saw no spark.
