89 75hp mariner carb trouble?

houseboat

New member
I bought an older houseboat that had a 89 model 75 hp 3 cylinder mariner outboard on it.
While rebuilding the houseboat I took the motor to a boat shop who went through the motor got it running and tested it out for me. Got it back without much time. New plastic tank, which does have the vent in the cap. The tank sits even with motor but the lines run uphill to the fuel / water separator which sits higher than the motor. Tried to start it took a while but finally started and would back fire almost like a sneeze. Running out of time I had to load the boat. It was a permit load due to width and the hauling was already scheduled. Took a day to load, the next morning we pull to the lake about a 2 1/2 hour trip, generally only about 1 1/2 hours in a car. Called the boat shop on the way down they said you might have to adjust the carbs a little.
Unloaded the boat and it starts up, a warm day. Drive to the marina with out any issues.
Now in the early morning hours the motor doesn't like to start and if it does I get the back firing "sneeze". After things warm up the motor will start and run "OK" not great but OK. Appears when it starts and runs OK it's always warm and the vent less tank is swelled some with some pressure.
Now for the questions
Do I have too much gas line?
Is the elevation an issue?
Is the vent less tank an issue, never had seen one but couldn't find one to buy with the vent in the top?
Can someone walk me through adjusting the carbs, a picture or two would be great also because I'm not sure which screws are for which jets?

Boat is 1 1/2 hours away so if there are questions I may be able to answer or it might have to wait until I get back down there.

Thanks
