89 60 hp Mercury problem

After starting motoring and idling for a few minutes i go to shift either forward or reverse and engine stalls-seems to sputter - i have adjusted idle and replaced pump ball for fuel w/ no luck ?
 
Check all your fuel lines and the tank pick-up for air leaks or blockages.

Try pumping the ball to see if that will keep it running. If it does, rebuild the fuel pump.

If it makes no difference, pull the carbs, disassemble and clean them out - rebuild them if necessary...
 
i have checked fuel lines, but not fuel pick up-can you tell me where that is located-thanks for the info-hap72
 
In the gas tank - there is a little filter screen at the end of the tube (bottom of the tank) - any "gunk" that was in there can clog it up..
