"Hello,I have 89 225 evinrude.

"Hello,I have 89 225 evinrude.The problem that I have is the boat is running in nutral idels perfect. I put it in foward works fine then when i shift from foward to revers and stop on nutral egine shuts off.I have to put the shifter back on nutral turn on engin and then hit revers and will not shut off.A mechanic told me that it was the nutral switch that is located on the engin under the foward and revers linkage.Is thier a way of testing that switch to make sure is that?"

I would suggest to adjust the

I would suggest to adjust the shift cable and lubricate the switch to be sure it operates as intended. It might even be a case of shift cable going 'bad'. The cable need a small 'play' in order to make the SHIFT INTERRUP SWITC operate as intended. Be sure the engine operates on all cylinders when engaged forward or reverse befor adjusting idle.

You are right jw its called a shift switch my bad.What I mean is when I turn the engine on in nutrual and go reverse the engine dosent shut off it stays on .The problem is from reverse to nutral to foward then the engine turns off. I have to place it in nutral turn engine on then go foward.Morten I will check for play.Yes the engine reuns great and Idels perfect.

They had told me to disc sw and see if it was still doing it.Is that the only way of cheking the sw? jw once I disc the sw and it still doing the same could it be the switch then? Thank you

"I got the feeling You are messing up a couple of things.
The engine have 2 switches:
1: No start in gear switch in the remote control. This prevents starting the engine if the lever is in forward or reverse: this why You have to go to neutral to restart.
2: Shift interrupt switch on the shift mechanism on engine. This cuts out one bank of cylinders when a certain load is put on the mechanism. Normally it will only engage when shifting OUT of gear, providing the mechanism , lever, bushings etc are properly lubed. Out of gear it easies the force needed to disengage the clutch dog from forward/reverse gear due to a negative cut in the lugs. If gear cable is not correctly adjusted, shift-stroke is wrong,++++ the switch may be engaged and cutting 3 cylinders whichever gear You shift into or out of.
Try to disconnect the cable from the engine and shift by hand directly on the lever. If everything works, get the cable adjusted properly and check the shift cable travel from remote. If cable is sticking, change it."
