89 140 VRO problems

"1st which cylinder is the #1 so we can check timing, manual we have doesn't identify it.

Just replaced the fuel pump now the engine bogs down and dies when put in gear and throttle is engaged.

Any help is appreciated."

Starboard side top right is number 1, port top left is 2, starboard right bottom is 3, port bottom left is 4 See below

The problem you mentioned has nothing to do with timing just so you know.
Carbs and idle jets is where you start, maybe spark test, compression etc, link and sync ?
Spend some time and post the problem in great detail, history of the engine, what led to this problem, What you have done so far and I know the guys on this site will nail down trust me. Good luck"
 
Engine ran fine till the fuel

Engine ran fine till the fuel pump went out. We replaced the VRO fuel pump and that was when the problem started. It rev's fine when not in gear but when put in gear and throttle is engaged it dies.

"Start by installing a new filter, check your fuel for water or contamination.
Use a portable tank to isolate the problem , change the primer bulb.."
 
Did you re-build the carbs?

Did you re-build the carbs?
Did you do a link and sync?
Did you do a compression test ? Results ?
What type of plugs are you running ? Checked ? Gap?
