89 110hp evinrude spark plugs?

Hello,

I just purchased a boat and has 110 evinrude vro engine. I put nkg spark plugs in and it ran terrible. Throttle was all way down, and boat was just bogging down. I was informed evinrude's of this year only take champion's is this true? Are there alternative plugs that I can use? I put a new set of champions in and they are only lasting about a month.
